Sculpture Blog round #2

Sculpture Blog round #2

This semester I am taking sculpture VI which means more blogging, yay! So this time around going to be doing more updates on my blog. I'll post sketches of my work and some of the artists I like.

First, I will start with art pieces that I like from a variety of different artists.

Most people already know, but I am in love with pop art. I love the bright colors and fun subject matter. I have made some fun pieces out of tootsie pop sucker wrappers that are very pop art. So it's only fair that the first sculptor I choose is Roy Lichtenstein. I love comics, so I love the classic comic dots on their faces. The hair, face and emotions in these sculptures are very stylized. It's literally straight from a comic book. Head with Blue Shadow, has comic qualities which is 2D while the head in the sculpture is completely 3D. I like the play of combiding them in one sculpture, its very original. Another quality I tend to favor in some sculptures is simplicity. Lichtenstein does a very well job of this in House 1. The sculpture is just a colorful house but I love that about it. If a pop house were to exist it would probably look exactly like that. The angle of the house is interesting it makes it look like it takes up space. Even though the sculpture is of a non-realistic house, the angle makes it look more real. A little contradicting but I like that is like that.

The second artist I choose was Seward Johnson. My sculpture teacher gave me an abundance of papers to go through with many different artist and Johnson was one of the them. The particular sculpture that was on the paper was Dejeuner Deja Vu. I have taken about 4 different art history classes so by now I know the a lot of the popular pieces throughout the decades. As soon as I saw the paper, I knew I  recognized the image from a previous art history course. This one was different though it was a sculpture version of it. The sculpture was inspired by Manet's Le Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe. The alikeness of the sculpture to the real thing is stunning. The idea is just so simple but he does it so well. I love that about his work, its not just about the sculpture but the paint, props, and background play a huge role as well. God Bless America is pretty funny. I love that he took the interesting couple in American Gothic and placed them in Chicago. Actually, according to Johnson's site they visited more places then that. Something about that just makes me smile. Maybe it's the fact that it is combiding the classic painting factor with the high class sculpture in the middle of city factor. Both are so different on their own. Even if I don't end of doing any art inspired by Johnson, I still am intrigued by his work.

The third one is contemporary artists Marc and Gillie. I found this group online when i was researching artists. They caught my eye because their work is fun and contemporary. I think they are ones that I could get inspiration from. I love the way they are mixing two different things, like a dog and human, into a sculpture. The factor puts them in contemporary category, just like my creatures I make in sculpture. Marc and Gillie say they uses this iconic imagery of dog/human hybrids to celebrate the relationship that exists between man and animal. I like that they have a deeper understanding to them, that is very clear in every single on of them. I also love the fact that they have the human/dog hybrid doing a whole bunch of human activities. If anything I think that is where I want to push my creatures into more naturalistic poses.

New Project (3) - Rubber Molds Oomoo

In my Sculpture class, we have three critiques a semester. Which means we should make three projects total for the semester. But I am in taking Sculpture 2 and 5, so I have to make 6 projects total this semester. So we finished our first critique, which means time to move onto a new project.

This semester, I wasn't exactly sure of what I wanted to make for my projects. I made a Cat during first critique with a demon mouth. But my Sculpture teacher gave me this awesome idea of instead of making it a demon mouth, saying it's a dinosaur mouth. I am a 3D major with a concentration in Ceramics (more sculptural aspect), and I've been recently making lots of sculptures of dinosaurs. So I thought that worked perfectly into what I love to make. I like the cat concept, and in critique one of my fellow students suggested to do more pets. So my projects are going to be this contemporary part with the pets combined with some old that comes from the dinosaur parts.

For the 2nd critique section, my other project will be a Hamster with Spinosaurus back and tail, or Spinomstersaurus.

I finished sculpting it, and now I need to make a mold for it. Another goal of my for this class is that I want to learn how to make molds and different ways of casting pieces. After, I'm done with school here, I was planning on going to Makeup School for special effects. A really important quality of special effects is mold making and casting prosthetics. So this way I can make projects for class but at the same time learn molding techniques for the future.

For this project, I wanted to try a rubber mold again. This time it is Oomoo, and not Rebound. In the next couple pictures you will see that it makes the negative mold in the end. But it requires walls around it.

Me and my professor helped me built the walls around my piece. Then I put clay on the inside for more cushions on the sides. After I mixed up the Oomoo, and poured it in.

After that, I made a mother mold for it. Just for more support and strength. This one turned out much better than the other one. But due to time, I just casted it in plaster. And surprisingly it turned out pretty good.

New Project (2) - Rubber Mold Rebound

In my Sculpture class, we have three critiques a semester. Which means we should make three projects total for the semester. But I am in taking Sculpture 2 and 5, so I have to make 6 projects total this semester. So we finished our first critique, which means time to move onto a new project.

For the 2nd critique section, one of my projects will be a Bunny with Tyrannosaurus legs or  Bunnyrannosaurus.

For my Bunnyrannosaurus, I wanted to try out using a rubber mold. My professor suggested getting Rebound 25 from SmoothOn.

One mixes equal parts of yellow and blue containers then apply to piece. There was a bunch of other steps but not to bore or confuse you, I basically added four coats on to my piece.

Then from there I made a three part mother mold. Just for extra support. My professor said it would be a good idea, especially for later when pouring.

For there, I took it out of the mother mold and my mold broke into like 8 pieces. Which was my own fault, I should have constructed the mold better and I will for sure for the next time. Then I got all the clay from inside and cleaned it up. After I cut along the seams I made on the mold. But it was to much cuts so the mold would not fit right in the mother mold. So me and my professor have been trying was to fix it. Unfortunately, I did not get it done in time for the critique, but I am determined to finish by the next one.

Final product of the Cat

Here are some pictures of how my cat turned out. Me and my Sculpture teacher are currently working on a sealer to put on it. Then from there, I was planning on spray painting it.

First Project in-process Pictures

For our first project in my Sculpture 5, I choose to make a cat with a demon mouth on it's chest. I figured it's fun and getting close to Halloween. I have never casted a piece in plaster before, and I want to start to know the process with molds, and casting. So I figured making into plaster would be a good place to start.

1) First, I molded my cat into clay.

2) Then from there, I put the metal pieces in it to divide it into two parts. I mixed up some plaster and whipped it onto one side of my piece. Let that dry and then did the other side. After that dried, I cleaned up the edges and slowly wedged my piece open.

3) I then cleaned out the molds and got it prepared for the final step. Then I put it in evenly in the sand.

4) I mix up some more plaster and poured that inside. Then I let it sit and dry. Slowly, wedged it open and hammer away the outer plaster mold.

After, I did have to go back in and re-carve out some of the detail especially in the mouth area. I do not have a final picture up but I will get it up soon to show you how it turned out. I did epoxy his tail and feet back on. I do plan on painting it and I will post pictures to when I get to that stage.
